q!Bad’s “vacation arc” thoughts :3

At first, my feelings on this arc was boredom, a little sigh at playing up the usual skeppy-addicted bits, when it felt like there was a goldmine of opportunity to do a lot more crazy stuff with it. But after really considering q!Bad’s actions the past week, the events of today, and reading some other posts I realized- it’s not how it seems.

Under the veil of silly goofy this is wayy more angsty and serious. This isn’t just another of the usual skeppy bits, this is different. q!Bad is genuinely devastated and mourning over missing his dear friend, to a degree we haven’t seen before. and he’s mourning over the risky things he had to do during the elections, which only put him & his kids in more serious danger. This so-called “vacation arc” isn’t a vacation at all.

This is a grieving arc in disguise.

The vacation, the jokes, all of it is done on purpose. all to build a facade for the audience, and for the character himself, who is lying to himself about the true weight of his emotions. (have you noticed how often he’s been drinking this past week?)

It’s being played so well that if you didn’t realize it at first, good I believe that’s the point. even the other characters are just now starting to notice & get actually concerned that something more is wrong, and their friend needs real support!

The truth comes out in things like q!Bad asking Foolish for a hug (and I stress: he never does this) yelling about not wanting to wear his armor, and saying he wants to “extend his vacation.” (more like wanting to extend his mourning period)

But it’s so obvious that his kids are the light that’s pulling him through this dark time. how fitting it is that he calls them his sunshines. especially when earlier today, Dapper and Pomme gifted him the scythe they worked hard to make together, with the fitting name of Sunshine Protector. afterwards q!Bad was emotional and literally said:

“I’m content right now… maybe I don’t need to extend my vacation.”

and that’s the line that made it aalllll click for me.

anyways to wrap it up yeah I’m so impressed with how this character arc is going :D

(probably) clever fight club epiphanies that have smacked me in the face with a hammer recently:

marla is the centre of tyler. tyler is created as a version of narrator that he deems good enough to date marla as well as a projection of his desire for marla that he represses along with his other desires throughout the book/film. tyler is presented as a father/teacher figure for narrator (but chuck palahniuk cannot write convincing romance unless it's accidental so they actually have better grounds for a relationship than narrator and marla somehow). as narrator goes through the events of fight club and learns to accept his true self without the guidance of tyler, he is finally able to reassess and realise his desire for marla (which is def better portrayed in the book than the film). this also makes the scene in the book where marla tells narrator that she loves him instead of tyler and 'can tell the difference' hit 10x harder.

the modern world (1999 and also present day) advertises self-actualisation through consumerism ('self care' ect.). at the start of the book/film, narrator buys into these ideas of essentially 'buying happiness' though his materialism/consumerism when it comes to ikea catalogues (quote from the film- "I was one step from being complete"- also how these companies are constantly creating new stuff to stop you from ever actually feeling complete so you buy more stuff). however, throughout the events of the book/film, narrator's repressed anger towards this consumerist ideal of being 'complete' manifests itself into tyler, fight club and project mayhem- these are ways he tries to self- actualise and find himself without buying more Stuff.

fight club is created as a social model for men. the men in fight club are able to confront and find the courage to challenge their issues through fighting each other- this concept of being able to work through issues is not as widely accepted for men in other forms of therapy groups, such as the testicular cancer group at the start of the book/film that also asks men to confront/challenge their issues through talking and meditation. to the men in the testicular cancer group (who are already emasculated through their medical diagnosis), this form of therapy is seen as 'girly' and therefore shameful, which is why, in the book, the entire testicular cancer group disbands to join fight club. in this way, they are able to confront/challenge their issues in a way that society deems 'appropriate', and therefore in a way that they do not feel shame for doing so (this also serves to comment on the alluring nature of extremist groups such as incels to men seeking support who are unable to ask for help of out fear of ridicule).

(though probably not chuck's intention because this book was written in the 90s and separating sex from gender was not a common discussion) the motif of emasculation through the loss of physical attributes (the testicular cancer group/ project mayhem castrating people) points towards materialism in society and the unstable masculinity of the men in this book. these men are easily emasculated and are unable to understand how their inner identity is not directly related to their outward appearance, which is something tyler would fight against in my woke trans reality ("is that what a man looks like?" ect. ect. ).

“Sirius!” Lily exclaims. “We were looking for you.”

“Oh?” He presses a quick kiss to her cheek before bending down to pick Harry up, who immediately cuddles into his arms with a tired sigh. Poor baby, must’ve been exhausted by all the excitement at the beach.

“Yeah, regarding tonight—“ Sirius gulped quietly at the way she said that “—Your room is a bit…messy, I’m sorry. We were reorganising and well, y’know how it goes…”

She shrugs apologetically but all Sirius can think about is how she called it ‘his room’. Not the guest room, not the spare, but his room. Sirius’. He once again pushes past the mushy feelings that rise in him at that little distinction.

“Oh, it’s—it’s fine, I can just take the couch, no problem.” Even if his feet tend to hang off the end, and the edges are a bit lumpy, it’s fine. He resolutely doesn’t think about his comfortable Alaskan King at home.

“Of course you can’t!” Lily scowls at him. “We’re not gonna put you in a couch in your own house, Sirius.”

There it was again, the reference to him belonging here. It was a bit presumptuous, slightly possessive but Sirius was a dog at heart, he was never going to turn down ownership.

“Er—the nursery, then?” he asks, confused.

“What, crammed up in Harry’s crib beside him?” she says with a scoff, “Don’t be silly.”

Sirius blinks. “Where am I sleeping then?”

“With us, of course.” He jumps at the voice booming from behind him, clutching Harry tighter to his chest, whirling around to find James munching on a carrot.

“Where did you come from?” Sirius mutters under his breath before straightening up and saying, louder, “And what do you mean with you?”

“Well, like Lily said,” and here he sends a meaningful, entirely undecipherable, look towards his wife who…blushes? “Your room’s temporarily indisposed, the couch isn’t even an option—don’t give me that look, you barely fit on the thing—and the floor is gonna mess up your back worse than it is.”

“Oi!”

“So, our room it is.”

Right. Of course. Because that’s the obvious conclusions. How could he say no?

(Again, he can’t so he doesn’t)

It’s twenty minutes later, after Harry’s been put to bed, thoroughly kissed by his parents and godfather, after James is done with his nighttime turmeric milk and Lily’s put her hair up into braids and Sirius has taken out all his rings and chains and bracelets—that’s when he’s stumped by yet another problem.

How, exactly, are they going to sleep in one bed?

“We’re just going to expand it a little, Pads, don’t worry,” James says, supremely unconcerned.

He goggles at that, staring at the casual wand work. A part of him wonders why this is the extent of magic they’re using to solve this problem—James can conjure a bed Silenced, with his eyes closed—but promptly decides to not dwell on that for everyone’s sake.

honestly? byan's one of those people who'd like to be open to all pronouns bc they're oh so fond of gender fuckery, but they can't bring themself to actually lean into that entirely bc they know that a lot of people would resort to using 'he' to refer to them. people would see 'he' as the default bc they're amab so it's what they'd hear the most and it would be impossible for them to feel any amount of trust in anyone who chose 'he' over 'they' or 'she'. this is a big part of why they decided to insist on using they/them exclusively, even though they don't mind she/her. much as they love to play around with that "haha i could be your boyfriend and your girlfriend" kind of energy, it leaves too much room for freaks to get away with being secret transphobes for their liking.
